Accomplishments and Future Planning

Over the last five years, our Board of Directors has made many improvements. Being frugal and paying for improvements as we go, protects the financial integrity of our District. The District is dedicated to ensuring that businesses and residents of Joshua Tree have a reliable, affordable water supply well into the future.

Current & Proposed Projects

H-Zone Pipeline Replacement Project (Completed)

This summer, the District completed the long awaited replacement of over 58,000 feet of old, four to six inch steel pipeline in the Friendly Hills area of Joshua Tree. We will begin engineering to replace remaining 4-inch pipelines in the coming year. This will provide a more reliable delivery system and improved fire protection.

Protecting Water Quality

Last year, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed that local septic tanks pose a threat to the safety and quality of Joshua Tree’s water supply. To prevent contamination in the future, new developments are now being required to install their own onsite "package sewage treatment" plants-- costs to do this will be borne by customers connecting to the new service. This project is a part of the Board’s long term vision to protect the groundwater.

Groundwater Recharge

Recognizing that our local supply of water is being reduced every year, JBWD will begin storing water from Northern California snowpack in our basins to be stored for future use.

Voters approved a tax in 1990 for the Morongo Pipeline to bring water to Joshua Tree. This recharge project will complete the Morongo Pipeline. The water will be transported to recharge pools where it will percolate and be filtered naturally into the groundwater basins to be stored for future use. This project has been in the planning stages for the past three years. The recent statewide drought and reliability crisis confirm the District’s concerns that this water may not always be available to JBWD.

Annual Preventive Maintenance Program

JBWD is implementing a preventive maintenance program to refurbish the District’s 17 water reservoirs, large booster pumps, fire hydrants, and other facilities on a regular basis.  This will prolong the life of the equipment and give customers more efficient water delivery.

New Service Lines

New water lines are being planned for Hi Desert Medical Center, Hi Desert Continuing Care Facility, local Sheriff and County facilities and surrounding neighborhoods. This will prevent water disruption to these facilities which are strategically important to the entire Morongo Basin.

Water Conservation Demonstration Garden (Completed)

Our District will soon have a demonstration garden at the District offices.  The garden will be paid largely through grant funding and will show customers how easy it can be to landscape their homes with beautiful native, drought-resistant plants, which require little to no water.
